Inverness has seen a period of dramatic growth in recent years, most evident from the extent of retail and housing development. As a commercial centre, Inverness serves the wide and diverse region of the Highlands and Islands. The region's economy, predominantly based on industries such as agriculture, fishing, whisky production, textiles, tourism and oil fabrication, has expanded to include high technology research centres, call centres and information technology based businesses. A regional digital telecommunications network provides new business opportunities in remote areas.

The telecommunications network is also at the heart of the UHI project which aims to establish a University of the Highlands and Islands by providing locally delivered degree courses throughout the region.
